Depending on your unique case, an extraction can either be completed at our office or may be referred out to an oral surgeon.
Reasons For a Tooth Extraction
One of the most common reasons for a tooth extraction is to remove wisdom teeth. This procedure is normally handled by an oral surgeon. When your wisdom teeth are impacted it can stop your teeth from growing in normally or can cause damage to the nearby teeth.
In some cases, a dentist may recommend an extraction to make room for proper tooth alignment. Other times, a tooth needs to be extracted when it’s badly damaged or decayed. In some cases, an extraction, can prevent infection and relieve pain.
The Tooth Extraction Process
A tooth extraction process should take no longer than a few minutes and is a painless process. Most extraction processes look similar to this:
- After taking x-rays, the dentist or oral surgeon will review them with you and talk through the entire process with you.
- The dentist will use a local numbing agent for the tooth, gum, and bone.
- Throughout the extraction, you should only feel pressure and no pain.
- Normally, the dentist can remove the tooth using applied pressure, rather than surgical invention.
The Recovery Process
Once the procedure is over, your dentist will send you home with instructions on how to properly care for the extraction sites in the following hours and days. Some patients may need to cover the area with gauze.
For patients who experience pain after their extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon may prescribe medicine to give you some relief in the days following the procedure. The gums should fully heal in a matter of weeks, as long as the site is kept clean. Once healed, you may be interested in replacing the missing tooth with an implant, bridge, or denture.
