How to Conquer Your Fear of the Dentist

November 28, 2022

scared of the dentistBeing afraid of the dentist is nothing to be ashamed of! In fact, roughly 36% of Americans fear the dental chair. Whether it is the sound of the drill, the thought of pain, or just the memory of a bad experience – visiting the dentist can be a dreadful experience before it even happens! At Woodmen Dental Group – we are committed to creating a relaxing atmosphere for all of our patients. Here are some ways we help you conquer the fear of the dentist.

A Dentist You Can Trust

Our reviews speak for themselves, but we are proud to be a trusted dental office in Colorado Springs. We understand that feeling comfortable with your dental providers is one of the most important elements of stopping dentist anxiety. If you haven’t settled on a dentist in your neighborhood, we encourage you to meet our dentists and see if it is a good fit.

In addition, make sure to talk with us about our relaxation methods and sedation options. We want you to be comfortable!

A Friend Indeed

A friendly face can do a lot in curbing anxiety. We welcome you to bring along a support person to your dental visit. They can sit with you while you wait and provide a good distraction before your appointment.

Relaxation Options

We already mentioned asking for sedation options, but be sure to communicate with your dentist or hygienist if you feel like you need a bit more comfort. Many offices have televisions on the wall or ceiling. Ask your provider to turn it to a funny movie, or something familiar. You can also ask for a warm blanket or bring comfort items from home – such as headphones with your favorite, relaxing music.

Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is power, and our dentists and dental hygienists understand this. During any procedure, we make sure to explain every step of the treatment so you aren’t left with any surprises (or you aren’t left in your head imagining a worst-case scenario). We also welcome you to ask any questions you may have about your procedure or treatment. We can help educate you or provide additional resources.

Rushing Around

When we are in a rush, we can feel irritated, anxious, and on edge. To avoid feeling even more anxious about your dentist appointment, make an extra effort to arrive early. This will allow you time to fill out the necessary new patient paperwork, talk with the office staff, and settle in before being called back.
